Anime meets Christmas? Challenge accepted! 🎭✨
Designing for someone else is always exciting… but designing for a theme you know NOTHING about? That’s a whole new level of crafting pressure! 😱
That’s exactly what happened when I was asked to create a Tokyo Ghoul-inspired stocking gift card holder. But crafting is all about rising to the challenge, thinking outside the box, and making magic happen! So, I did my research, fired up Design Space®, and went to work.
And let me tell you… when Jack’s mom saw the finished stocking and said, “That is freakin’ awesome!” I KNEW I had nailed it! 🔥
This stocking isn’t just unique—it’s proof that custom crafting can turn ANY theme into something festive & fabulous! Let’s break down how this spooky-meets-merry stocking came to life! 🎨✨

🛠 Build the Pull-Tab Stocking – Your First Step!
Before diving into the Tokyo Ghoul design, let’s talk construction!
This isn’t just any stocking—it’s interactive! That means a sleek pull-tab mechanism that makes gifting even more exciting.
👉 First things first: Build your pull-top stocking using the base tutorial! Once your stocking is assembled, come back here for the real magic—adding those epic Tokyo Ghoul-inspired embellishments!
🎭 A Ghoul, a Stocking & a Cricut Walk Into a Craft Room… (Here’s What Happened!)
Let’s be real—I had no clue where to start with Tokyo Ghoul. But after some deep dive research (aka scrolling through SVG files like my life depended on it), I found a bold red silhouette that screamed, “This. Is. IT.” 🔥
💡 Pro Tip: When working with an unfamiliar theme, let color and shape guide you! Even if you’re not an expert on the subject, bold contrasts & recognizable details will bring the design to life!
🖌 Step 1: Designing the Front – Bold, Dark & Dramatic
✔ The Red Silhouette – The heartbeat of the design! This eye-catching Tokyo Ghoul-inspired image was enlarged and centered on the Basic Black stocking base for maximum impact.
✔ Layered Deckled Circles – To frame the character, I cut two nested Deckled Circle Dies:
• Inner Layer: Basic Black
• Outer Frame: White Willow
✔ Instant Drama! – Placing the character inside these matted layers added depth, contrast, and a sharp, polished finish.
✔ Real Red Toe & Heel Accents –
💡 Pro Tip: Always test out your layout in Cricut Design Space® before cutting! Resizing and layering digitally saves time (and cardstock!) when bringing your vision to life!
😈 Step 2: Crafting the Back – The Masked Icon
The front was done, but I wanted the back to be just as striking! 🎭
✔ A Black-and-White Masked Character SVG – I found the perfect Tokyo Ghoul image and knew it had to be the star of the back.
✔ Layering for High Contrast – I placed the masked character on a White Willow Deckled Circle to keep the sharp details crisp against the black background.
✔ Real Red Toe & Heel Accents – To tie in the front design and balance the stocking, I added bold red deckled embellishments.
✔ Final Touch: The Tokyo Ghoul Title! – No stocking is complete without a title! I resized and recolored a Tokyo Ghoul text SVG, adding it to the back for one last punch of drama!
💡 Pro Tip: When mixing black & white designs, use bold accent colors (like red or silver) to keep the layout visually dynamic!
❄️ Step 3: Making It Festive – A Spooky Christmas Twist!
Tokyo Ghoul is dark, intense, and eerie—but it’s still a Christmas stocking! Here’s how I balanced the spooky with the seasonal:
🎁 Wrapped Gifts & Candy Canes – Cut using the CTMH Home for Christmas Digital Art Kit, these festive elements added just the right touch of holiday cheer!
❄️ Snowflakes for a Wintery Touch – Cut from White Willow cardstock, the delicate snowflakes softened the look without clashing with the bold design.
🌿 Holly Leaves with an Edge – Instead of traditional green, I went for Brushed Silver Foil holly leaves cut with the Poinsettia Petals Dies to keep things sleek & modern.
🖋 Hand-Drawn Stitching – Using a white gel pen, I added stitched details on the toe & heel for a whimsical, handmade touch.
💡 Pro Tip: Holiday embellishments don’t have to be traditional! Play with metallics, bold color pops, and unexpected textures to keep things fresh & fun!
