Dive under the sea with me as I share the details of this Little Mermaid-inspired birthday card featuring Ariel and her trusty sidekick, Sebastian! 🌊 This 5x7 card is packed with underwater magic, glittery waves, and just the right touch of Disney charm. Here’s how I brought this project to life—and how you can too!
Materials Needed
Most of the items used in this card are available in the Otterly Adorable Suite Collection. Check the description on my Stampin’ Up! website for a full list of included materials—but don’t worry, you can always purchase items individually too! Here’s what I used:
• Stampin’ Up! Riverside Irregular Pearls
• Stampin’ Up! Otterly Amazing Bundle (stamps & thin cuts)
• Stampin’ Up! Real Red & Pretty Peacock Stampin’ Blends Combo Pack (for Ariel’s hair & Sebastian’s shell)
• Stampin’ Up! Balmy Blue and Pretty Peacock 8-1/2x11” Cardstock (for water plants)
• Deckled Circle Dies (for center circles)
• Garden Green & White Willow 12x12 Cardstock (center circles & waves)
• Gray Granite 8-1/2x11” Cardstock (rocks)
• CTMH Charcoal Ink (for edging the rocks)
• Licensed SVG for Ariel and Sebastian (colored with Stampin’ Up! Markers)
• Design Space®️ & Cricut®️
• Paper Trimmer, foam tape, glue, Stampin' Seal adhesive, Cut & Emboss Machine
Designing in Design Space®️
Before cutting anything, I designed this card in Design Space®️ to save time and ensure everything fit together perfectly. I find objects similar in shape to the stamps and dies I plan to use, then resize them to match the actual dimensions. This lets me see how everything will look on the card before making any cuts. It’s a quick and easy way to bring my vision to life while avoiding surprises during assembly!
For today's card, I am using SVG files that I will print and cut with my Cricut. I then color them with my Stampin' Blends Markers and set them aside to dry.
Assembly Instructions
1. Set the Scene
Start with a 5x7 card base from your CTMH stash. Cut a piece of Otterly Adorable DSP to 5x7 to serve as the underwater backdrop.
2. Make Some Waves
Use In-Color Glitter Specialty Paper, three-color glitter specialty paper, and White Willow Cardstock to cut out waves. Place White Willow cardstock behind each wave for contrast. Layer the waves at the bottom of the card for depth, and add one smaller wave at the top to frame the underwater scene.
3. Circles & Ariel’s Spotlight
• Die-cut circles using the Deckled Circle Dies from Garden Green and White Willow Cardstock. Adhere the white on top and ink the edges of the Garden Green circle using a Sponge Dauber with Garden Green Classic Stampin’ Pad for dimension.
• Place Ariel at the center of the circles, adhering her with foam tape for a fun, 3D effect.
• Cut water plants from Balmy Blue and Pretty Peacock Cardstock and adhere them to either side of the circle to enhance the underwater vibe.
4. Details That Rock
• Cut “rocks” from Gray Granite Cardstock and edge them with CTMH Charcoal Ink for definition.
• Position the rocks under Ariel’s arms to make it look like she’s leaning on them. Place Sebastian on the bottom right-hand side of the card. Add another rock behind Sebastian, along with a tiny water plant, to complete the ocean floor effect.
5. Final Touches
• Add a “Happy Birthday” title cut with your Cricut®️, placing it above Ariel and the circles. Pop it up with foam tape to add dimension.
• Finish the card with Riverside Irregular Pearls, adding sparkle for a magical touch.
